Zanzibar is
cultural blend of African, Arabic, Persian and Indian forming a very unique
Swahili culture rich with history.
Many
famous explorers such as Dr David Livingstone, Burton, Speke, Krapf
and Rebman lunched their expeditions into the interior of the African
continent at the turn of the 19th century – but the first mention
of this Island made as early as AD 60, in the Greek record of contemporary
events ‘The Periplus of the Erytheam sea’.
Persia ,
India
and
North Africa
visited its shores starting a dynasty in trade that is still evident at
Kizimkazi, Tumbatu and Wambaa.
The
modern history of the
Island
is marked by the arrival of the Portuguese and the British. Portuguese
navigator, Vasco da Gama, was the first European to explorer to arrive on the
east Coast, on his way to
India
in 1499. The first English ship, sponsored by Edward Bonaventure, under the
command of James Lancaster, arrived inZanzibar
1592.
